What sports are integrated into the Sports Academy?

Basketball, Baseball, Soccer and Flag Football form the core sports of the Academy with Lacrosse and FAST Fundamentals Training (hand-eye coordination, speed, agility, balance, etc) integrated as well. Campers interested in receiving tennis instruction can participate in an AFTERNOON TENNIS CLINIC (separate from the Sports Academy) from 1:00pm – 2:30pm at a nearby partner tennis club – additional cost applies.

Who are the coaches at the Sports Academy?

Once again, we are in the process of partnering with a number of top-quality and well-respected sports programs from NYC and Long Island to provide experienced coaches for each sport to lead our Sports Academy to the next level. We will also have Sports Academy counselors who will include varsity high school and collegiate level athletes.

How is the Sports Academy program organized?

Campers participate in a rotation of 2 sports each day with a balanced combination of intensive instruction and structured gameplay, including organized Sports Leagues where campers play on different teams complete with coaches, referees, league standings and playoffs! We are also looking into setting up “Intercamp Games” with other local programs so our Sports Academy athletes have the opportunity to participate in fun tournaments throughout the summer. When it comes to instruction, we subscribe to a “Progressive Skill Development” approach with some of the highlights below:

  • Tailored specifically for each sport, age and ability level
  • Skill(s) of the Week identified and introduced to our campers for every sport
  • Skill-specific drills, lessons and tips integrated into all instructional periods
  • Week-to-week progressive skill development (building on prior week’s instruction)
  • Games that reinforce the skills learned will be built into all instructional periods
  • End-of-day review of skills learned, strategies and games played
  • Emphasis placed on good sportsmanship and ‘playing the game the right way’
  • Our coaches are selected carefully with an eye on character – positive influences are key to building confidence both on and off the court/field so we go the extra mile to leave our campers feeling like winners

Will the Sports Academy campers miss HCDC traditions like Spirit Days, Pow-Wows and Special Events?

No! We’ve modified the schedule so that the Sports Academy will start a little later on Wednesday and Friday mornings so campers don’t miss Spirit Days or our weekly STARFISH Pow-Wows. Campers also return to HCDC each afternoon so that they can enjoy all of the Spirit Day games/contests as well as camp-wide Special Event programs!

Is there a minimum number of weeks or an additional fee for the Sports Academy?

Sports Academy campers must be enrolled for a minimum of 2 weeks and there is an additional fee of $75/week.  Please call HCDC at our winter office (516-953-5171) or summer office (631-537-1770) to enroll your child(ren) in our Sports Academy program.
